Why it matters

AS/NZS 3003 is mandatory for new patient areas and extensions, and the responsibility sits with the clinic or health facility. Where a medical procedure bypasses the skin's natural resistance, the electrical installation has to give extra protection to the patient and the clinician.

The two classifications

Body-protected area. Where an applied part of medical electrical equipment contacts the patient during procedures that bypass the skin's natural protection.

Cardiac-protected area. Where an electrical connection is intended to the heart, through an externally contactable conductor such as a wire or a liquid-filled tube.
